TV extras get pay lift in Argentina

Union members score salary increase

After weeks of negotiations, some 3,000 unionized TV extras in Argentina have secured 18% to 200% pay increases from networks and producers, the Union of Public Entertainment Workers said Friday.

Deal, which takes effect Jan. 1, also limits daily studio shifts to six and a half hours with catering and includes payment for transport and dress rehearsals, among other things.

It came after extras began a walkout Nov. 22 and a day later staged a noisy picket line in front of the studios of Telefe, a leading broadcaster.

Contract actors, meanwhile, continued to strike for a fifth day Friday to demand shorter workdays and higher pay, a dispute that has halted production and the airing of fiction series. A number of actors have expressed desire to end the conflict, suggesting that they will accept to work the nine-hour days producers say are needed to make daily and weekly series like the womanizer comedy "Lalola."
