Transposed to Paris, the adaptation of Alan Ayckbourn's London-based play explores the loneliness and longing of six middle-aged characters.
Resnais "treats the characters the way an affectionate puppeteer would treat his creatures,” critics’ org Fipresci said in explaining its decision.
“He contemplates their comings and goings with the benevolence of one who knows that agitation is vain, but who prefers that people find it out for themselves."
In a statement, EFA said the “award honors one of the greatest directors of European cinema who has exerted a crucial influence on modern film.”
The award will be presented at the 20th European Film Awards ceremony on Dec. 1 in Berlin.
Sky Movies announced Tuesday that the awards will be broadcast exclusively in the U.K. on Sky Movies Indie.
The pay TV channel will present extended highlights of the ceremony in a 90-minute program on Dec. 3.
The hosts for this year's awards will be French actress Emmanuelle Beart and German actor Jan Josef Liefers and special guests will include French thesp Jeanne Moreau. Jean-Luc Godard will receive an honorary award at the ceremony.
