Shepard Smith stays in Fox News

Anchor renews contact with cable network

Shepard Smith has re-upped with Fox News for a multi-year contract. Financial terms were not announced, but reports put Smith’s salary between $7 and $8 million a year for a little over three years. Those figures would give Smith the top salary on cable news.

Smith, who has been with Fox News since its 1996 launch, anchors “The Fox Report with Shepard Smith,” which averages about 1.4 million viewers a night. Smith has covered Hurricane Katrina, the World Trade Center attacks, and the Iraq war. Smith has risen through the ranks from his beginning as a local news anchor in Holly Springs, MS.

“The Fox Report” is consistently number one in its timeslot, airing opposite “Lou Dobbs Tonight” on CNN and “Hardball with Chris Matthews” on MSNBC.
