Pic has Daniels and Matlin playing a married couple with a 6-year-old son who lost his hearing at the age of four. Their relationship is strained when Daniels' character, who has his full hearing, begins exploring the idea of cochlear implants for their son.
Lensing on the pic began this week in Los Angeles.
Sargent directed the 1985 deaf-themed Hallmark pic “Love is Never Silent,” earning an Emmy for his work.
"This movie is more about the deaf community and deaf culture than 'Love Is Never Silent,' which was more of a personal story," Sargent said.
"Sweet Nothing" will explore the fierce debate over cochlear implants, which Sargent said are not universally beloved by the deaf community.
"As hearing people, we assume that anyone who's deaf would like to hear," he said. "That's not the case in every instance .... (Some) view it as trying to fix something that doesn't need any repairing."
Helmer is working with many of the key production crew from "Love Is Never Silent" for the new pic, including co-exec producer Marian Rees and producer Anne Hopkins.
Sargent's credits range from episodes of "Lassie," "Gunsmoke" and "The Fugitive" to telepics such as "Something the Lord Made," "Miss Rose White" and "The Karen Carpenter Story."
