Kristen Stewart to star in 'Twilight'

Catherine Hardwicke will direct film

Kristen Stewart has signed on to star in Summit Entertainment's thriller-romance "Twilight," based on Stephenie Meyer's young-adult novel.

Catherine Hardwicke will helm the film, which centers on a 17-year-old girl who moves to a small town to live with her father and becomes drawn to a mysterious classmate who seems determined to push her away. Their unorthodox romance puts her in danger when his nemesis comes to town. Melissa Rosenberg adapted the screenplay

Shooting is scheduled to begin in February 2008.

Karen Rosenfelt and Greg Mooradian will produce alongside Mark Morgan via his Maverick Films banner.

Published by Little, Brown in 2005, "Twilight" was a No. 1 New York Times bestseller that has spawned two sequels: "New Moon" and "Eclipse."

Stewart, who currently appears in Sean Penn's "Into the Wild," is shooting Greg Mottola's "Adventureland."
