The 43-year old has been under investigation by the federal government for over four years to determine whether or not the home run king lied to a grand jury over the use of steroids and other performance enhancing drugs.
The news comes on the same day MLB commissioner Bud Selig announced a $6.075 billion dollar revenue for the league in 2007. The league has been under scrutiny with their handling of the steroid issue, with critics accusing the league of turning a blind eye to the matter because of their fears of a decline in TV ratings and overall ticket sales.
Bonds, who was implicated as a user of BALCO's performance enhancing drugs in the tell-all 'League of Shadows' book, faces five counts with the indictment: four counts of perjury and one count of obstruciton of justice. The charges stem from his Dec.4, 2003 grand jury testimony when he allegedly testified that he did not knowingly take steroids.
Bonds, who recently parted ways with the San Francisco Giants, was in pursuit of a one-year deal with another club when the indictment was announced today.
