Preparations got under way in earnest Nov. 12 ahead of the first Asia Pacific Screen Awards being held here on Queensland's Gold Coast.

Nominees attended a buffet lunch, presenters held a two-hour dress rehearsal and jury prexy Shabana Azmi started a round of interviews with local and international media. "These awards are an idea whose time has come, both politically and culturally," she said.

Outside, workmen decked out the Sheraton Mirage hotel with flags and banners. Show organizer, Queensland Events, even uprooted a kite festival to come fly its wares on the beach for the duration of APSA meet.

Some 34 movies from 19 countries will vie for 11 prizes at the Nov. 13 event, which is backed by CNN and UNESCO.
