Rivers flows to Geffen Playhouse

Autobiographical 'Theater' replaces 'Species'

The world premiere of Joan Rivers’ four-character autobiographical play, “The Joan Rivers Theater Project,” will take over the Geffen Playhouse slot previously held by “Female of the Species,” a Broadway-bound play that was to be Annette Bening’s return to the Rialto.

“The Joan Rivers Theater Project,” written by Douglas Bernstein and Denis Markell, will open Feb. 13 and run through March 30.

Rivers stars in the play, which is set in her dressing room immediately before an awards preshow. Rivers takes a look at aging, life’s ups and downs, and being a woman in Hollywood.

Play received a workshop at San Francisco’s Magic Theater in August.

Geffen producing director Gil Cates said there is still a possibility of rescheduling Joanne Murray-Smith’s “Female of the Species” for next season. “Rivers” was booked as a replacement while the play’s Broadway producer continues to explore casting options.
