The first showcase of six Czech pics, dubbed Made in Prague: New Czech Cinema, includes Jan Hrebejk's romancer "Beauty in Trouble"; Dan Wlodarczyk's "The Indian and the Nurse"; Helena Trestikova's kudo-winning docu "Marcela"; David Ondricek's small-town study "Grandhotel"; Petr Nikolaev's dark comic cult pic "It's Gonna Get Worse ..."; and animated fairy tale "Fimfαrum II," featuring the work of Jan Balej, Aurel Klimt, Bretislav Pojar and Vlasta Pospisilova.
Pics will open at the 11th Czech Film Festival in London, which starts Thursday, then tour 13 U.K. cities with 52 theatrical screenings over three months.
The showcase is co-sponsored by the Czech Center in London and the Brit exhib chain City Screen Picturehouses.
The Czech Film Center has already had success with this nontraditional distribution model in Austria and Germany.
