Mirovision gets U.S. remake deal

Co. pacts with NHO for 'APT'

Leading Korean indie distribber Mirovision has moved into new gear with a U.S. remake deal and the reactivation of its production slate.

Company has struck a deal with NHO Entertainment for an English-language remake of its 2005 horror pic "APT." NHO's Mark Costa and Ford Oelman expect to announce the attachment of major director within the month.

Mirovision has greenlit "Tomorrow News," an adaptation of a well-known Manga comic collection, on which former AD Chung Keung-sup will make his helming debut. Pic, being made on a budget in excess of $6 million, will lense beginning next spring and make use of a Korean special effects consortium. Company also optioned TV series rights.

It is now in production on 1940s epic romancer "Once Upon a Time," being helmed by Cheong Yong-Ki, director of hits "Marrying the Mafia" parts I and II.

Mirovision has been under new management since January, when topper Jason Chae was called up for military service. It appointed former Samsung Entertainment Group exec Bae Su-seok as CEO and in recent weeks hired former French cultural attache Nicolas Piccato as international co-production specialist.

Theatrical distribution operation this week bought a slew of rights to pics including Ed Zwick's "Defiance" from Essential Entertainment, "The Women" from Inferno and "Juno" from Mandate Intl.

On the sales front, Mirovision licensed its sequel "Mafia, the Salesman" to Thailand's Jiant Entertainment.
