This low-budget genre pic featuring John Cusack as a cynical "occult travel" writer and Samuel L. Jackson as the motel operator who warns him "don't go in there" grossed an impressive $72 million domestically. Collector's-edition purchasers get deleted scenes and some featurettes, but are notably left out of several exclusive goodies that are only available to those who rent the title at Blockbuster.

Helmer Juan Carlos Fresnadillo found the edgy, quick-cutting style established by Danny Boyle in "28 Days Later" communicable enough to pick up himself. In this effective sequel, the U.S. Army manages to quarantine the "non-infected" on the British Isles -- until Robert Carlyle comes down with the Rage Virus and triggers an insurgency.

For those with impenetrable psychological barriers, helmer Eli Roth has restored an original ending deemed "too shocking" for theatrical auds -- that's quite a claim, since the pic's multiplex patrons had to witness graphic torture and dislodged eyeballs. Sony also released "Hostel Part II" on Oct. 23.
