Born in Winnetka, Ill., Dawson came to New York City in 1955 after his graduation from Yale. He worked in radio as the talent coordinator for "The Tex and Jinx Show" on WOR, until he became special events director under Robert Moses at the 1964 World's Fair.
In the early 1970s, he co-managed The Ballroom in Soho before he moved the club to Chelsea, where it hosted musicians Peggy Lee, Patti Page, Rosemary Clooney, Eartha Kitt, and Baby Jane Dexter.
Dawson, a painter and sculptor, encouraged other artists like Marion Pinto, whom he memorably engaged to produce a giant photorealistic mural of the interior of The Ballroom.
He is survived by a sister.
