Preemptive deal marks the second seven-figure pact for Phillips this month. It closed last week amid a constricting market for pitches as a potential WGA strike looms.
Comedy revolves around Murray Farkus, a pillar of his community who, when falsely accused of an unspeakable crime, goes on the run to clear his name and reputation. Story is loosely based on Phillips' own Uncle Murray.
Phillips will write with Garelick after tackling "The Hangover," a spec script by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore that Warners recently acquired for more than $2 million for him to direct (Daily Variety, Oct. 5). The studio is fast-tracking that project as a potential pre-strike movie.
Phillips will produce "Murray at Large" under his Green Hat Films banner and is attached to direct. He recently reupped his first-look deal with the studio, renaming his shingle Green Hat in the process. He is also attached to direct "Man-Witch" and "Men" there.
Garelick co-wrote "The Break-Up" with Jay Lavender. Duo subsequently sold "The Golden Tux" to Phillips' shingle last year for him to produce.
