ABC picks up 'Pushing Daisies'
'Private Practice' also gets full season

"Daisies" is the second frosh series to receive a "back nine" pickup from the Alphabet, which has also given the full-year go-ahead to "Private Practice." Other likely pickups include "Dirty Sexy Money," "Women's Murder Club" and "Samantha Who?"
Hailing from Warner Bros. TV, "Pushing Daisies" has averaged a solid 3.9 rating/11 share among adults 18-49 after three airings, according to "live plus same-day" data. Skein also has averaged 11.1 million viewers in its Wednesday 8 p.m. slot.
"Daisies" was near the top of every TV critic's must-see list heading into fall and remains a fave. Bryan Fuller created the show and exec produces, along with Barry Sonnenfeld (who helmed the pilot), Dan Jinks, Bruce Cohen and Brooke Kennedy.
"Daisies" stars Lee Pace as piemaker Ned, who discovers he can bring the deceased back to life by touching them. He resurrects his childhood crush Chuck (Anna Friel), and the two launch a flirtation hampered by the fact that they can never come into physical contact or she will die again, this time permanently. Chi McBride, Ellen Greene, Swoosie Kurtz and Kristin Chenoweth also star, with narration by Jim Dale.
Show has hit some bumps along the way, as producers have struggled to keep up with budget and time constraints while trying to maintain its unique, colorful look.
In one instance, exec producer Sonnenfeld, who also directed the first regular episode, was asked not to return to helm subsequent segs after Warner Bros. TV grew leery of cost overruns.
The studio eventually reversed course, however, and asked Sonnenfeld to direct more episodes this fall. But due to other commitments, Sonnenfeld isn't available again until midseason. Now that "Daisies" has a full order, however, the director is expected to shoot another seg later this year.
