Rees and Matthew Harrison, board president of the summer theater company, did not return calls for comment.
In 2005 Rees ("Nicholas Nickleby"), who also has a high profile in film and TV ("Cheers"), succeeded Michael Ritchie as head of WTF. Ritchie resigned to take over as producer of the Center Theatre Group of Los Angeles, which oversees operations at the Mark Taper Forum and the Ahmanson Theatre.
Williamstown managing director Bill Darger also recently departed his post.
Speculation is that Nicholas Martin, in his final season as a.d. of Boston's Hungtington Theater Company and a longtime Williamstown helmer, will take over at WTF.
Martin was unavailable for comment.
