Bruce Dern directs family affair

'Location' to star Laura Dern, Diane Ladd

Bruce Dern is making his feature directorial debut with the indie drama "Hart's Location" -- and starring for the first time with daughter Laura Dern and ex-wife Diane Ladd.

The film is set to be shot in Louisiana in February, with Dern producing via his Harry Rose Prods. banner along with Wendy Guerrero and Ashley Reed.

Story, penned by Reed, centers on a daughter attempting to regain custody of her son and seeking out her father -- who left her when she was 3 years old. Reed, who had worked with Dern on a stage play called "Chicken," began developing "Hart's Location" three years ago with the goal of uniting the Derns in a project.

"It made sense for all of us to be in this project because a lot of the story turns on the things that you wish that you'd said to your family members," Dern told Daily Variety. The thesp recently penned an autobiography, "Things I've Said but Probably Shouldn't Have: An Unrepentant Memoir."

Dern noted that he had worked with Ladd on "Mrs. Munck," which she directed. Laura Dern worked with her mother on "Rambling Rose," "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" and "Wild at Heart."
