"Babel" scribe Arriaga also penned the screenplay for "Burning Plain," which weaves together two storylines taking place in the past and present. Basinger will play Gina, the mother of Charlize Theron's character as seen in childhood. Theron will play Sylvia, who tries to find common ground with her parents after a turbulent childhood. The two narratives eventually converge.
Drama begins shooting in early November in New Mexico.
Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are producing. Theron exec produces alongside 2929's Marc Butan, Todd Wagner and Mark Cuban. Beth Kono is co-producer.
Basinger will shoot "The Informers" opposite Billy Bob Thornton later this month. She will next be seen in the indie thriller "While She Was Out."
