Spotboy adds three pics to slate

'Mahadev,' 'Dev-D,' 'Anil' greenlit

HONG KONG — Spotboy Motion Pictures, the second production label of Indian entertainment conglom UTV, has expanded its Hindi-language slate with a trio of projects.

Veteran helmer Shyam Benegal will direct "Mahadev," a comedy about a village letter writer who dreams of better things.

Shingle will produce "Dev-D," modern-day reworking of the classic "Devdas" tale, which will be directed by Anurag Kashyap and star Abhay Deol.

First up, multihyphenate Raj Kumar Gupta will make his feature helming debut with "Anil," a thriller about an innocent man made to follow a series of menacing phone instructions. Lead role is claimed by TV star Rajeev Khandelwal.

Spotboy, launched in May, will take over some UTV Motion Pictures projects, but is largely developing its own. In August it unveiled a pact with Richard Branson's Virgin Comics to develop four superhero films. Company moniker is a reference to the errand boy on an Indian film set.
