A Festival of the Water Cities sidebar will be held on Oct. 26 in the Chinese city of Suzhou, which is hosting the Oct. 23-28 fest this year. Suzhou, like Venice, is a waterside city, built on the Yangtze River and on the shores of Lake Taihi in the province of Jiangsu.
The sidebar will present a selection of Chinese pics that have unspooled on the Lido over the past decade, picked by China's Film Bureau. They include Zhang Yimou's "Not One Less," the Golden Lion winner in 1999; Jia Zhanke's "Still Life," which took the top Lion in 2006; and Ang Lee's recently Lionized "Lust, Caution."
Pics' helmers and stars are expected to attend, along with Venice artistic topper Marco Mueller, who is an ardent fan of Chinese cinema.
Besides bringing the Lido fest closer to the Chinese film community, the initiative strengthens the economic bond between Venice and Suzhou, sister cities that have been doing biz since the days of 13th century trader Marco Polo.
