'Alexandra' finds U.S. distrib

Cinema Guild picks up Sokurov film

The Cinema Guild has picked up "Alexandra," the latest film from "Russian Ark" helmer Alexander Sokurov, and plans a limited U.S. run early next year.

The Cannes competition film is now screening as part of the New York Film Fest. It centers on a Russian grandmother (played by opera star Galina Vishnevskaya) traveling across a war-ravaged landscape to visit her grandson at a remote military outpost.

Ryan Krivoshey, distrib director for the Cinema Guild, said U.S. auds should connect with "the story of a nation mired in a seemingly endless war."
