Stuart Beattie ("Collateral") wrote the script about the U.N. hostage negotiator who successfully brokered the release of long-held hostages from Lebanon-based terrorists in the late 1980s.
Jennifer Klein will produce through Apartment 3B, with Beattie. Plan is to get into production early next year.
The film is based on a memoir by Gianni Picco. While the U.N. vet played a central role in negotiating the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan and the end of the Iran-Iraq War, the film focuses on his dogged efforts to free a group of hostages who included Terry Anderson and Terry Waite, the latter of whom was kidnapped while trying to broker a hostage release."Most of the movies in that world right now are filled with action, but what attracted me to this political thriller is that the only weapon this guy has is the power of his negotiation skills, and his word," Travis told Daily Variety. "It raises ways to deal with conflict that is happening now, which makes it relevant."
Travis is best known for directing "Omagh," the drama about a 1998 IRA bombing that was co-written by Paul Greengrass. He just completed his first Hollywood feature at Sony. "Vantage Point," with Matthew Fox and Forest Whitaker, will be released early next year.
"Peter's take on the script was great, and we're excited to get started," said WIP senior veep Paul Federbush.
Cherry Road's Kendall Morgan Rhodes and Bo Hyde are exec producers, and Tommaso Fiacchino is co-exec producer.
