Ellis began his career in New York in the 1950s, where he wrote for “I Spy,” adventure series “Captain Grief” and courtroom drama “The Verdict is Yours.”
Moving to Los Angeles in 1960, he wrote for series including “Bonanza,” “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea,” “Combat,” “The Fugitive” and “The Outer Limits.” During the 1970s and 80s, he was story editor and supervising producer on “Baretta,” “The A-Team” and “Hunter.”
Born in New York, he grew up in a family that worked in Yiddish theater, which helped inform his writing.
He is survived by two sons and two grandchildren.
