Mexico looks to 'Light' for Oscar

Deadline for submissions on Jan. 22

HOLLYWOOD -- Mexico's Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences has picked Carlos Reygadas' "Luz Silenciosa" (Silent Light) to rep the country for foreign language Oscar consideration.

Pic won the jury prize at last year's Cannes Film Festival for drama. This is the third feature for Reygadas, who also wrote and produced.

Drama centers on a married man who strays from the teachings of his Mennonite religion when he falls in love with another woman.

The deadline for submissions is Monday and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the foreign language film nominations on Jan. 22. The Oscar ceremony takes place Feb. 24.

Meanwhile, Mexico's Academy selected Paul Leduc's "El Cobrador: In God we trust" to represent Mexico at Spain's film awards, the Goyas.
