Keifer Sutherland was arrested early Tuesday on suspicion of driving under the influence, after being pulled over in Hollywood for making an illegal turn and then allegedly failing a field sobriety test, according to the Los Angeles Police Dept. After spending three hours in jail, he posted $25,000 bail and was released with an Oct. 16 court date.
But later in the day, he kept a commitment to the Canadian actors union.
Sutherland, who attended high school in Canada, received an award of excellence from the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists. The afternoon event, held at the official residence of the Canadian consul general in Hancock Park, was closed to the media.
Award was presented by ACTRA national president Richard Hardacre, who cited the thesp's commitment to Canada and Canadian performers. The union noted that Sutherland's the son of Canadian actors Shirley Douglas and Donald Sutherland and the grandson of Tommy Douglas, a champion of Canada's healthcare system.
The union also noted that Sutherland "continues to encourage and work in support of universal health care for all Canadians."
Sutherland was also scheduled to introduce Brian Grazer at Saturday's "True Blue" fundraiser for the Los Angeles Police Foundation at the Paramount lot. A foundation spokeswoman denied news reports Tuesday that Sutherland would no longer be making the presentation at the charity event.
A PR rep for Sutherland said it was premature to comment on the arrest.
