Las Palmas to honor Kawase
Festival screens tribute to Japanese director
Kawase won a Cannes prize for her drama "The Mourning Forest." She has recently announced the production of her next pic, "If Only the Whole World Loved Me."
Mexican cinema will be repped by vet helmer Hermosillo ("Two Auroras," "Esmeralda Comes by Night") and a contempo Mexican film sidebar.
The ninth fest will also have a sidebar devoted to Direct Cinema, the U.S. movement, whose pioneers included producer-director Albert Maysles and helmer Richard Leacock.
"Direct cinema has been one of the more influential movements not only in the U.S. cinema but also worldwide," said Utrera.
Las Palmas focuses on Asian and Ibero-American films, and aims to spotlight overlooked national cinemas.
Fest runs Feb. 29 -- March 8 on Las Palmas, one of the Canary Islands.
