Career Action Marketing Plan (Part II)
- Get in touch with people who currently have the type of job that you want. Interview those executives. Find out what tract they took to get to where they are now.
- Always keep your technical and industry knowledge current. Don't allow any lapses to occur, especially when you are re-entering the job market after a hiatus or an especially lengthy job search. Most execs don't want to hire someone who needs start-up time - They want you to hit the ground running. So whether you are a CPA, an attorney, or a creative director, stay in the flow and continuously update your skill sets.
- Volunteer within your own company for extra work - or special assisnments. Not only will you learn about new areas of the business, but you will also expand your own network of people inside the organization and build new relationships. Volunteering shows your boss initiative and the will to expand and grow.
- Cross-pollinate your skills inside your company first. Oftentimes it is easier to transfer to another job discipline inside your own organization than it is to make a job change to that particular discipline in which you have no experience. You are a proven commodity - they know your work, so when you make a request to either change departments or simply increase your responsibilites to include a different skill set, your boss may be receptive - It's always worth a try before you decide to leave for a different job.
