The original band members -- John Lydon, Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock -- made the announcement made via music magazine website NME.com.
"Maybe it's because we're all Londoners, but there would be no Sex Pistol without dear old London town," said the band's frontman Lydon.
The band was one of the most controversial to emerge from the 1970s punk movement. Singles such as "Anarchy in the UK" were banned by broadcasters, which made the Pistols more popular among their teenage following.
Bass player Matlock left the band in 1977 and was replaced by Sid Vicious, who died in 1979 from a drugs overdose.
The band split in 1978, but reformed a decade ago to perform at concerts and festivals in the U.K. They split again in 2003.
