Story centers on a legendary astronaut and true American hero who finds himself horribly injured in a car accident and rebuilt by the government to be a bionic man, but on a budget of $40,000 -- which makes him not all that bionic. Chris Bender and JC Spink are producing; Jake Weiner exec produces.
New Line set up "The $40,000 Man" earlier this year, buying a spec from John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein.
Zwigoff is rewriting the script with Daniel Clowes, who teamed with him on "Art School Confidential." Duo also received an Oscar nom for penning "Ghost World."
Zwigoff's helming credits include "Bad Santa," "Crumb" and "Ghost World." Benderspink is in production on "Major Movie Star" with Nu Image/Millenium and "Insanitarium" at Screen Gems and in post-production on "Kill Theory" for Lionsgate.
