"Catacombs" is the first original movie bought by Fearnet since it launched 10 months ago. The ad-supported Fearnet's lineup consists of Sony and Lionsgate action pics, highlighted this month by "Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2," "Krull," "Starman," "Nightwing" and three Godzilla movies.
Diane Robina, prexy of Fearnet, said that the 18-34-year-old Comcast digital subscribers targeted by the service avoid linear program schedules and are gravitating in bigger numbers to Fearnet, making it one of the top 10-rated VOD platforms out of a total of about 300 (including such powerhouses as HBO On Demand) among Comcast's 23 million subscribers.
"Catacombs," from Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures (the "Saw" franchise), and starring Alecia Moore (aka Pink) and Shannyn Sossamon, deals with a young woman who stumbles into a nightmare when she gets lost in the 200 miles of limestone tunnels beneath the streets of Paris.
The movie premieres on Fearnet VOD Oct. 1; four weeks later, on Halloween, it will be available for streaming onto computers through Fearnet.com. "Catacombs" goes out on DVD early next year.
Fearnet had previously commissioned two short-form miniseries from Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures: "Devil's Trade," which kicked off earlier in the summer; and "30 Days of Night: Blood Trails," which starts this week. The latter is a companion to the "30 Days of Night" theatrical movie from Columbia Pictures, based on the graphic novel, which opens in theaters next month.
"Catacombs" is co-directed and written by Tomm Coker and David Elliot. The producers are Twisted Pictures' Mark Burg, Gregg Hoffman and Oren Koules.
