The pic is currently shooting in Toronto, so execs made the announcement while in town for the festival. The cost is understood to be in the $5 million range.
Miramax topper Daniel Battsek has a history with Mireilles, having released "City of God" to strong B.O. In the U.K.
Focus, which scored with the Brazilian helmer's "The Constant Gardener" in 2005, is handling the film internationally.
In the story, when a sudden plague of blindness devastates a city, a small group of the afflicted band together to triumphantly overcome the horrific conditions of their imposed quarantine.
The film is based on Nobel Laureate Jose Saramago's book. The script is by Don McKellar, who won a Tony for "The Drowsy Chaperone." It stars Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Alice Braga, Danny Glover and Gael Garcia Bernal.
The producers are Niv Fichman, Andrea Barata Ribeiro and Sonoko Sakai.
