Del Toro was creative supervisor on the original "Orphanage," which was produced by Rodar y Rodar and Telecinco Cinema, and marked the directorial debut of Juan Antonio Bayona. Rodar's Joaquin Padro and Mar Targarona, and Telecinco's Alvaro Augustin produced.
A sales hit for Wild Bunch, the ghost tale was picked up for the U.S. by Picturehouse at the Berlin Film Featival and went on to screen in Cannes Critics Week.
The original "Orphanage" stars Belen Rueda ("The Sea Inside") as a woman who takes over the orphanage where she was raised to open a home for disabled children. Then her young son begins to play with the same imaginary friend who terrorized her when she was a child.
From a screenplay by Spain's Sergio G. Sanchez, "Orphanage" was produced in collaboration with Warner Bros. Pictures Espana.
Warner Bros. will release "The Orphanage" in Spain on Oct. 11, a week after it opens the 40th Sitges Film Festival of Catalonia.
