Past Donostia Award winners include Robert De Niro, Francis Ford Coppola and Woody Allen. Gere's "Hoax" screens in the Spanish fest's Zabaltegi Pearls section.
More than an indirect homage to Ingmar Bergman, who died late July, Ullmann's award is a recognition of her distinguished career as both an actress and film director said: "We initiated contacts with Liv Ullmann at Cannes. She is a grand dame of European cine and theater, and has outstanding films as an actress with other directors," said San Sebastian Film Festival director Mikel Olaciregui.
San Sebastian will screen her four feature films as a director, including "Faithless."
The prize also synchs with San Sebastian's Cold Fever, a panorama of recent Scandinavian films.
Adding further star wattage to the fest, Viggo Mortensen and Demi Moore will attend San Sebastian to tubthump "Eastern Promises" and "Flawless," which open and close the festival.
Fest's official jury will comprise novelist-director Paul Auster as chairman, Swedish actress Pernilla August, Italian thesp-producer Nicoletta Braschi, Iranian director Bahman Ghobadi, Spanish actor Eduardo Noriega, Argentine actress Susu Pecoro and British helmer Peter Webber.
