Tokyo smoothes the way for 'Silk'

Period drama to close film festival

TOKYO -- Canuck helmer Francois Girard's period drama "Silk" will close the Tokyo Film Festival on Oct. 28, fest officials announced Tuesday.

Pic stars Michael Pitt as a 19th century silkworm smuggler who travels to Japan on business with his wife, played by Keira Knightley.

 Produced by an Italian Canadian consortium, "Silk" will world preem at the Toronto Film Festival this month.

Alliance Atlantis will release the pic in Canada, Picturehouse Entertainment in the U.S. and Asmik Ace in Japan.
