Austria picks Oscar entry

'Counterfeiters' entered in race

By ED MEZA

BERLIN — Stefan Ruzowitzky's World War II drama "The Counterfeiters" ("Die Faelscher") has been selected as Austria's entry in the foreign-language Oscar race.

"The Counterfeiters," which screened in competition at this year's Berlinale and went on to win a best supporting actor prize for Devid Striesow at the German Film Awards, is the true story of a disparate group of imprisoned artists, financiers and swindlers secretly assembled in a concentration camp to forge millions of pound and dollar notes to support the German war effort.

Pic was co-produced by Hamburg-based Magnolia Filmproduktion, Studio Babelsberg Motion Pictures and Vienna-based Josef Aichholzer Filmproduktion.

It's Ruzowitzky's second film to be selected for the Oscar race: his 1998 film "The Inheritors" ("Die Siebtelbauern") was also submitted as Austria's candidate for the prize but was not nominated.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the nominations for best foreign language film on Jan. 22. Next year's Oscar ceremony will take place Feb. 24.
