'Live-In Maid' will be remade

Garcia to write, direct English redo

Rodrigo Garcia, who is helming Sony's upcoming drama "Passengers," is aboard to write and direct an English-language remake of "Live-In Maid."

The small-scale Argentine pic is directed by tyro Jorge Gaggero and stars Norma Aleandro ("Gaby: A True Story"). After winning a special jury prize at Sundance, it has played on a handful of screens since July to strong reviews. It opens at Landmark's L.A. multiplex Friday and has confirmed playdates in eight more U.S. cities.

Aleandro plays a former socialite on the verge of 60 who has run out of money but clings to her housekeeper (played by non-pro and onetime maid Norma Argentina) as both a vestige of the good life and a personal confidante of 30 years.

The remake rights were acquired by Andrew Herwitz's Film Sales Co., which also is distributing the original. Remake, slated to begin shooting in mid-2008, marks the company's first foray into production.

Garcia also directed "Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her," and episodes of HBO's "The Sopranos," "Six Feet Under" and "Big Love."
