Disc took a 40% hit and just missed hitting the million mark by 17,500 sales.
“Musical” far outpaced the No. 2 disc, Talib Kweli’s “Ear Drum” (Blacksmith Music/Warner Bros.), which sold 60,000 copies in its opening stanza. Sales and chart position are career-bests for the Brooklyn rapper who has been on tour since late July.
Producer Swizz Beatz, whose credits include Beyonce and Jay-Z, saw his debut album, “One Man Band Man” (Full Surface/Universal Motown) sell 45,000 copies to open at No. 7. Guests on the album include including the Ruff Ryders’ Drag On, Lil Wayne and Chris Martin of Coldplay.
One slot lower is As I Lay Dying’s “An Ocean Between Us” (Metal Blade), which sold 39,000 and gave the San Diego rockers their first top 10 entry. As I Lay Dying headlines a 30-concert tour on Oct. 27 that ends on Nov. 30.
The second album from rapper-singer M.I.A., “Kala” (Interscope), sold 29,000 to open at No. 18. M.I.A. began an international tour two weeks ago that will take her to a number of festivals through November, among them he Voodoo Music Experience Festival in New Orleans on Oct. 26 and the Vegoose Festival in Las Vegas on Oct. 27.
The Epic Records album Cartel created and recorded while inside a bubble for an MTV show sold 28,000 (No. 20). Band’s disc, beefed up with three bonus tracks, is being sold at Best Buy at a loss leader price of $7.99. Band was also selling autographed copies through the Sony store.
Other debuts included Rilo Kiley’s “Under the Blacklight” (Warner Bros.) selling 27,000 (No. 22); Joe Nichols’ “Real Things” (Universal South) moving 26,000 (No. 23), Travis Tritt’s “The Storm” (Category 5) breezing through 23,000 (No. 28); and the New Pornographers’ “Challengers” (Matador) pushing 20 grand (No. 34).
