NBC, News Corp. team on Hulu

Duo unveil name of joint online video venture

NBC Universal and News Corp. have given their joint online video venture a name: “Hulu.”

The consumer site, part of a broad Internet video distribution strategy, will be available in beta form in October, the company said.

“Why Hulu? Objectively, Hulu is short, easy to spell, easy to pronounce, and rhymes with itself,” said CEO Jason Kilar. “Subjectively, Hulu strikes us as an inherently fun name, one that captures the spirit of the service we’re building.”

Hulu will also oversee the distribution of News Corp. and NBC Universal-owned video across the joint venture’s affiliates and partners, including AOL, Comcast, MSN, MySPace and Yahoo, also beginning in October.

News Corp. and NBC Universal first announced plans for the joint venture in March. In July, Kilar, a former exec at Amazon.com, was hired to head the startup, which is based in Santa Monica.
