Bob Dylan performed at several editions of the Newport Folk Festival during the 1960s.
Sony will release a Bob Dylan concert film this year filled with footage from his legendary Newport Folk Festival performances from 1963 through 1965.
"The Other Side of the Mirror -- Dylan at Newport" will first be shown on BBC4 on Oct. 14 as part of an evening dedicated to Dylan and the Newport Folk Festival.
DVD is part of an international push for Dylan. Columbia Records is releasing worldwide on Oct. 1 a three-CD compilation of 51 Dylan tracks, a number of which were chosen through an online polling of fans. A single disc with 18 tracks will also be released on the same day. All tracks are previously released. A single of Mark Ronson's reworking of Dylan's "Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)" will be sold digitally.
"The Other Side of the Mirror" is helmed by Murray Lerner, whose 1967 film "Festival!" was a synthesis of four Newport fests. It was at Newport, R.I., in 1965 that Dylan first unveiled an electric band, using the Paul Butterfield Blues Band as his backing musicians. Dylan performed acoustically at all three of the fests.
Half of the material in "Other Side" has never been seen. Newport performances, including footage of Dylan debuting "Mr. Tambourine Man" at a songwriting workshop, were part of Martin Scorsese's "No Direction Home" doc.
"Other Side" is co-produced by the BBC's arts docu strand Arena.
Separately, Todd Haynes' Dylan biopic "I'm Not There" receives its world premiere this weekend at the Venice Film Festival. Columbia Records will release a two-CD soundtrack featuring Dylan's version of the unreleased "I'm Not There" and perfs by Eddie Vedder, Sonic Youth, Jack Johnson, Sufjan Stevens, Willie Nelson & Calexico and others. Disc will be issued around the film's November release date.
