The unscripted series, which follows the lives of students who write and manage "The Circuit" newspaper at Cypress Bay High School in Weston, Fla, is set to debut in the first quarter of next year.
Exec producer Marshall Eisen said MTV is avoiding the phrase "reality series" for this show -- the producers found a situation and filmed it, rather than creating drama in a prefab setting. "It's more of a docu-series, where we're talking about the lives of our participants," he explains. "And it's just a great way to get inside high school."
Cypress Bay is the largest high school in Florida, with an enrollment of 5,400 students.
"The Paper," currently in production, is produced by MTV News and Docs and will run eight episodes.
