Gallen is working on MTV's live hourlong primetime series "Celebrity Rap Superstars," which kicks off Thursday, featuring hip-hop tutorials in which experienced rappers teach B-list celebs from sports, music, film and TV how to hold their own in an eight-week series of rap showdowns.
"Working with the channel for over 15 years," said Tony DiSanto, exec VP of series development and programming for MTV, "Joel clearly understands the MTV sensibility, and his broad experience in all areas of production are key as we delve into new programming arenas."
Gallen's contract includes consulting on projects that are not produced by his Tenth Planet shingle.
Gallen produced the "MTV Movie Awards" for 12 consecutive years (1995-2006), directing most of the program's eye-catching short films. He also produced the Comedy Central roasts of Pamela Anderson, William Shatner and Flavor Flav, and directed the theatrical "Not Another Teen Movie."
