Project is the first to come out of 20th Century Fox TV's deal with Winer, who sealed a one-year pact with the studio last month (Daily Variety, July 23). Casting will begin shortly on the show, which will go into production later this fall.
"This Might Hurt" revolves around a multi-specialty private practice, in which a pediatrician, an internist and an OB-GYN all operate under the same roof.
Winer said the idea for "This Might Hurt" came out of his time clocked at the doctors' office, where he realized how infallible physicians appear to be.
"One of the funniest things in the world to me is pain," he said.
"This Might Hurt" also was inspired by Winer's project last year at 20th, "Giants of Radio." Like "Giants," "This Might Hurt" will contain improvisation from the actors. But unlike "Giants," which was shot on a budget before being shopped to nets (CBS ultimately bought the pilot, then passed on a series), "This Might Hurt" scored a network deal first -- and as a result, will shoot with much more money.
Winer is on board to direct the single-camera comedy, and will exec produce with Guy Walks into a Bar's Matthew Weinberg, Todd Komarnicki and Jon Berg.
