The Weinstein Co. has sold Italian rights to Stephen King adaptation “1408” and Rob Zombie’s “Halloween” remake to Lucky Red in a deal that signals the Italo distrib’s expansion from strictly arthouse to more commercial fare.

“This is a really important agreement for us because we had never worked with this company before, nor have we handled this type of product,” Lucky Red topper Andrea Occhipinti told Daily Variety. “Competition was very strong, even from the majors.” Rome-based shingle will entrust the two high-profile genre titles, from TWC’s Dimension label, to recently appointed distribution topper Ernesto Grassi, formerly at Eagle Pictures.

Toplining John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson, “1408” grossed more than $70 million Stateside this summer. Haunted-hotel pic will go out in Italy in November.

Serial slasher “Halloween” will roll out in the U.S. on Aug. 31 on 3,000 prints via MGM. Lucky Red is planning a January Italo outing.

TWC has an output deal with Italy’s RAI Cinema for titles produced under the TWC banner, but that deal does not include Dimension titles.

Long a prominent Italo arthouse boutique, Lucky Red, which this year is celebrating its 20th anni, will release Cannes Palme d’Or winner “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” this weekend.
