Germany honors Argentine cinema

Berlin hosts three days of screenings

BERLIN — Germany will pay tribute to 150 years of formal relations with Argentina by putting on three days of screenings from the South American country's thriving new cinema in Berlin from Sept. 13-15.

With backing from the German government, the Berlin Film Festival's World Cinema Fund and the Argentine Embassy in Berlin, the "Historias de vida y melancolia — Films from Argentina" will screen eight Argentine films and one Paraguayan-Argentine co-production in the Hackesche Hoefe theater in the central district of Mitte, which is also a partner in the series.

"The film series is certain to enliven the 150th anniversary of German-Argentine relations and will demonstrate the power and creativity of Argentine film to Berlin audiences," foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said about the event, which he will formally open with his Argentine counterpart Joerge Enrique Taiana and Berlinale topper Dieter Kosslick.

"The wealth of Argentine filmmaking is impressive and we're delighted the World Cinema Fund has been able to accompany some of these great films on their way," Kosslick said.

German-Argentine relations were formally sealed with a Treaty of Friendship in 1857.

The films to be screened include "Las Vidas posibles" by Sandra Gugliotta, "Copacabana" by Martin Rejtman, "Cronica de una fuga" by Adrian Caetano, "El Amarillo" by Sergio Mazza, "El Otro" by Ariel Rotter, "Estrellas" by Federico Leon and Marcos Martinez, "Hamaca Paraguaya" by Paz Encima, "La Nina santa" by Lucrecia Martel and "Los Muertos" by Lisandro Alonso.
