ESPN buys rugby site

Scrum added to online empire

ESPN has acquired another specialist sports website as the network moves to boost its online presence, purchasing rugby news, scores and info site Scrum.com from Scrum Ltd. for an undisclosed sum.

Net bought cricket Web portal Cricinfo.com in June and has launched French, German, Spanish and Italian versions of ESPNsoccernet.com.

ESPN Intl. exec VP-managing director Russell Wolff said: “Rugby has a global fan base. This acquisition complements our coverage of rugby across our other platforms in key territories.”

Purchase comes as the Rugby World Cup is set to kick off next month in France.
