According to distributor Showbox, monster pic "D-War" had grossed $42.3 million from 6.14 million admissions as of Tuesday to hit No. 10 on South Korea's list of most tickets sold.
Pic took only 14 days to rack up 6 million admissions, the second-fastest behind last year's "The Host," which took 10 days.
English-language film, which has been praised for the sophistication of its locally produced f/x, tells the story of a giant snake-like creature that smashes up downtown Los Angeles.
It will be released Stateside on Sept. 14 under the title "Dragon Wars."
Meanwhile, CJ Entertainment's "May 18" continues to do strong business in the No. 2 slot. Pic, released a week before "D-War," has grossed $35.8 million.
Film is based on a real-life 1980 incident in which large numbers of pro-democracy activists in the city of Gwangju were attacked and killed by government troops.
Advance ticket sales indicate that "D-War" and "May 18" are likely to continue their runs at the top of the box office chart through the coming weekend.
