Sino ‘Sinking’ time

TBS opens disaster film in China

The TBS network will open disaster pic “Sinking of Japan,” a box office smash last year, on 120 screens in China on Aug. 30 via local distrib Polybona.

Japanese pic will be the second released in China this year, following an installment of the long-running “Doraemon” toon.

Pic depicts the sinking of the Japanese archipelago into the Pacific following an earthquake. It has sold widely in Asia, and opened in South Korea to great success, but the Chinese release is a major coup for TBS, which developed and backed the movie and is now handling international sales.

Released in Japan by Toho on 250 screens, “Sinking of Japan” became the fourth-highest earning local pic of the year, making ¥55 billion ($47 million).
