Daniel Farias, 74, writer-director

Directed international TV hit 'Cristal'

Cuban-born telenovela helmer/scribe Daniel Farias passed away from an undisclosed illness Aug 10 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. He was 74.

Farias lived in Venezuela for 41 years and was a Florida resident the past seven years. He had been a consultant on various projects at Telemundo where his daughter Perla Farias is employed.

He is best known for directing international telenovela hit, "Cristal"(1986) which posted high ratings worldwide, especially in Spain. The 246-episode Latino sudser was Venezuela's most successful export then and paved the way for the sales of telenovelas around the world.

Written by Delia Fiallo, sudser aired at least seven times on RCTV which lost its terrestrial broadcasting license in May and is now only available on cable and satellite TV.

Farias also helmed an episode in telenovela "La Dama de Rosa" and acted in films and TV series, including Mauricio Walerstein's drama "De mujer a mujer" (From woman to woman) and telenovela "La Fracasada" (The Failure).
