UIP ankling Far East

World Brief

United Intl. Pictures (Far East), the Japan office of distrib UIP, has announced that it will close up shop by the end of the year.

Saturday's announcement was not unexpected since UIP has lost three of the four studios that once supplied it with pics. The most recent was Paramount, which recently appointed a new prexy, Ichiro Okazaki, to head its Japan ops, starting Sept. 1.

Ironically, UIP is enjoying success this summer with the smash hit "Transformers." Still to come on its second-half lineup are "Black Snake Moan" (September), "The Kingdom" (October), "Stardust" (November) and "A Mighty Heart" (December).
