Broadway hits a minor snag
Ticket sales down while 'Spring' awakens
|
But none of the drops were terribly dramatic, and some shows even rose a bit.
"Spring Awakening" ($826,146), for instance, was up more than $20,000 and broke the house record at the Eugene O'Neill for the second week in a row. The multiple-Tony winner played to capacity auds, as did the revived "Hairspray" ($901,232), whose receipts, boosted by the movie adaptation's publicity push, climbed a notch as well.
Perennial hits "Wicked" ($1,492,271), "The Lion King" ($1,320,574) and "Jersey Boys" ($1,207,628) also attracted full houses.
Heading into its final week of previews, "Grease" ($881,953) stayed strong, sliding just $5,000 and playing to more than 99% capacity. Meanwhile, "Rent" ($633,919), rejuvenated by the return of original cast members Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp, continued its sales streak, playing to near-capacity crowds.
Biggest gain of the week was posted by "Frost/Nixon" ($566,562), which climbed $45,000 for its best-ever weekly gross. Play ends its limited run on the Rialto Sunday.
New tuner "Xanadu" ($357,526) also was up, albeit only a little.
Down by about $40,000, "The Color Purple" ($1,004,965) held onto its spot in the millionaires' club, but "Legally Blonde" ($949,783) did not, sliding more than $50,000, the largest drop of the week.
Overall Rialto cume came to $18.3 million, down around $130,000 from the prior sesh.
