Agency insiders said the move was motivated simply by efficiency, with agents believing they will be more effective by focusing on fewer clients.
Though the number looks startling, particularly at a time when production is in high gear, insiders said this round of herd-thinning will claim less than 15% of the agency roster.
Agents were told two months ago to begin jettisoning clients "whose interests are not being well served by the agency," to use the usual tenpercentery lingo.
It's an ongoing process at most agencies. Endeavor has periodically trimmed its client lists in the past, though not this many at once.
The rumors about cutbacks became email fodder at rival agencies all over town Monday, though Endeavor would not confirm specifics.
With film and TV production currently revving up in fear of a 2008 strike, rivals speculated that Endeavor is prepping for a potential dip in commissions next year -- either due to a strike or a slowdown due to the current stockpiling.
If that's true, other agencies may also similarly begin trimming their client lists.
